“This year, until March 26, 2024, more than three and a half million dengue cases have been registered in America, including more than 1,000 deaths. This is a cause for concern because it is three times more than during the same period last year, a record year when the region reported more than four and a half million cases,” said Jarbas Barbosa, director of the Pan American Health Organization.
Rising average temperatures and extreme weather conditions, including heat waves and dry spells followed by storms and floods, are contributing to an increase in the number of virus carriers. Additional risk factors include rapid urbanization, often associated with poor sanitation and deficiencies in health care systems.
There is not yet an effective vaccine against the virus, which causes headaches, fever, vomiting, rashes and other symptoms.
In recent years, cases of infection have also been detected in Southern Europe.
