As the anniversary of the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia approaches, a population survey* commissioned by the fashion and lifestyle shopping center “Spice” found out which activities are most associated with freedom for the people of Latvia. For the majority, or 73% of the respondents, such a feeling is created by traveling, and in their answers, both women (74%) and men (72%) overwhelmingly emphasized traveling as a synonym for freedom.

The second most popular answer, chosen by 68% of economically active surveyed residents, is recreation in nature, followed by attending concerts and cultural events – 27%, sports – 19% and dancing – 9%.

Analyzing the results of the survey more closely, it can be seen that men associate recreation in nature with freedom more than women – this answer was chosen by 70% of men and 66% of women, while women (29%) more often than men (26%) chose the answer “concerts and cultural events attendance’. A greater difference of opinion can be observed regarding sports and dancing. Sports activities are more associated with freedom by men (23%) than by women (16%), while the opposite is true with dancing – 12% of women and half as many or 6% of men chose this activity as their sense of freedom.

The survey found that recreation in nature is most associated with freedom for the residents of Zemgale (72%), and the least for the residents of Latgale (63%). On the other hand, the inhabitants of Riga (79%) and Pieriga (78%) associate traveling with their sense of freedom the most, and the residents of Midzemnia the least (60%).

May 4 marks 34 years since the restoration of the Independence of the Republic of Latvia. In the context of the events in Ukraine and the Middle East, we think about freedom and its value more and more often, and we remember those who have contributed to the creation and restoration of the independent State of Latvia.

The music written by the band “Pērkons” and its founder Jura Kulakov has played a special role on the way to the restoration of Latvia’s national independence during the Third Awakening or the “Song Revolution”, when the restoration of the country’s independence took place without violence.

In commemoration of Juri Kulakov, who passed away this year, on May 14, the big Juri Kulakov memorial concert “Heart as thunder” will be held in Riga Arena, bringing together well-known musicians in Latvia. The concert is conceived as a tribute to the artist’s life and music, which for generations now inspires, excites, makes you feel, think and be – to be yourself.

The concert is supported by the fashion and lifestyle shopping center “Spice”, a long-time partner and supporter of the group.
