German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was booed during a speech at a citizens’ meeting in East Germany on Wednesday.
Both the right-wing Eurosceptic party “Alternative Germany” (AfD) and the far-left party “Die Linke” (“The Left”) had called for Scholz’s arrival in Europe to be met with protests against the rapidly rising cost of living.
Scholz’s performance was organized in the city square in a cordoned-off sector, where only invited listeners, who had been vetted beforehand, were admitted. Among them were employees of municipal companies, as well as representatives of the Red Cross, the tenants’ association and the local museum.
On the other hand, around 300 people had gathered outside the fence, who had responded to the appeals of the AfD and “Die Linke”.
Some of the protesters held placards calling for the chancellor to resign, while the crowd chanted: “Traitor, liar, pack up!”
The local newspaper “Märkische Oderzeitung” admits that, despite the loudspeakers, it was difficult to hear Scholz, but the applause of the invited audience was drowned out by the whistling and booing of the protesters, according to the chancellor.
