Ostapenko starts the prestigious Madrid tennis tournament with a sure victory / Article

Ostapenko, seeded with number 9, defeated the host Hesika Buzas-Maneiro in two sets 6-3, 6-1 in the first match of the tournament.

In the last week of April, Ostapenko is ranked 10th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking, while Buzasa-Maneiro is ranked 93rd. Buzasa-Maneiro started the tournament in the qualification, where they overcame two rounds and entered the main competition.

Alona will meet the winner of the match between neutral participant Veronika Kudermetova and Argentine Maria Lourdes Carla in the next round in the fight for a place in the round of 16.

As the higher seed, Ostapenko was free in the first round. The Madrid tournament has not been the most successful for Ostapenko so far – she is playing in the Spanish capital for the seventh season, but she has never reached the round of 16 before.

This season, Ostapenko won two titles in Adelaide and Linz, but a higher-level tournament is taking place in Madrid. Only four “Grand Slam” tournaments of the season are quoted even higher.

The tournament in Madrid will last until May 5, with men and women sharing a prize pool of 7.77 million euros on clay courts. The winner of the women’s singles will earn 1,000 ranking points.

In the season’s second “Grand Slam” tournament – the French Open Championship – the first matches in the main tournament will take place on May 26.
