President of the Latvian Tennis Union (LTS). Ernests Gulbis in a conversation with “Latvijas Radio”, he expressed his opinion about the Olympic Games, and also reminded about the need to ensure mass participation for sports lessons.

“The Olympics used to be, I think, a little bit different than they are today. For many developed countries, it is not so important how many gold, silver or bronze medals there are. It is much more important if the nation is healthy, people are engaged in sports,” emphasizes Gulbis.

“That pursuit of medals is either for countries like Russia and China for some of their own internal reasons, or, for example, for America, which just has a cool show, and you can discuss for two weeks where they got there with medals,” he points out the situation President of LTS.

“In my opinion, it is simply necessary to understand what we are going for. Are we going for high achievements, where we have to get some kind of medals at any cost, where the people are happy for two weeks and then forget about it for four years. Are we still thinking about how to get the maximum number of people involved in sports. What does sport mean? It’s just a healthy lifestyle, it’s a life span,” says the former tennis player.
