Today, April 27 – on the day of the Great Cleanup – the municipality of Ogre region organized a basement cleaning cleanup “Be ready!”. Its purpose is a basement or equivalent space arrangement, where minimum requirements are met to create or renovate a shelter.

On the cleanup day, the municipality provided waste containers to those who responded to the municipality’s call and submitted their basements for the construction of a safe place of refuge. Talk “Be ready!” several basements of apartment buildings in the city of Ogre were applied for, as well as private properties and apartment buildings in Ikškile, Lielvārde, Ķegum, Rembate, Tīnūži and Tome. Young people – Ogresgal’s 5th scout and scout unit – also got involved in the basement cleaning activities this week.

PIn the cleaning work of the municipality-owned shelter in Ogre, Indrānu street 14, municipal employees participated, who, together with Latvian and NATO allied forces soldiers from Germany and Spain, organized the shelter premises, freeing them from excess. The said shelter is the largest in the city of Ogre and was built during the Soviet Union as a hiding place for the then railway management in case of a possible nuclear war.

The work continued in the basement of the Jaunogre High School, which the local government, together with the soldiers, cleaned of construction debris and equipped with things necessary in a crisis situation – drinking water, fire extinguishers and first-aid kits – thus adapting the school’s basement to the needs of a shelter. Since this shelter is located near apartment buildings, it also meets the conditions for quick access to the shelter.

Confirming the compliance of the two shelters with the requirements, relevant signs were placed at their entrances.

The presence of soldiers of our and NATO allied forces on the day of cleanup proves that we are not alone in our concern for security. Expressing his joy and satisfaction for the joint work, the chairman of the Ogre County Council, Egils Helmanis, repeatedly emphasized that in the event of a crisis, it is essential that the shelter be within easy reach – as close as possible to the place of residence.

For this reason, the municipality of Ogre region invited every resident, institution, company and organization to assess the suitability of the basements in their possession for the establishment of a shelter and to participate in the practical work of adapting the basements, freeing them from excess, as well as cleaning the basements, on the day of the Great Cleanup – April 27.
