“What’s good about drones is that you can’t buy a gun as easily, you need permits, a special place to store the gun and so on, but you can go and buy a drone. And if the military teaches you what to put on that drone, then basically you don’t need a weapon anymore. Respectively, buying and storing a drone is relatively easier than a weapon,” Viesturs Silenieks, chairman of the board of the association “Drone Force – Europe”, explains in the TV24 program “On the line”.

“Imagine if we provided all the people of Latvia with drones, taught boys and girls in schools how to fly drones, which can be learned in a simulator program that costs approximately 20 euros, the controller costs more. It’s like playing computer games. Parents can buy computer games for their children, then most likely they can also buy a drone simulator. In schools, Jaunsardze and so on, this ability must be raised,” Silenieks believes.

He points out that currently, of course, drones and their capabilities are more and more widely mentioned in a military context, but the use of drones in other industries is also quite diverse.

“Drones are currently used in agriculture, cartography, and environmental sectors. Latvian state forests use drones to analyze forest cover density, wood and so on. Sprinkle mineral fertilizers, determine the quality and composition of the soil. It’s all done with drones. The knowledge gained with drones is not just about going to war, it is very broad.

Imagine, in theory, two million of us flying drones now – it’s madness from the adversary’s point of view, it’s a huge deterrent. Plus, the military is very good at doing things with them. So that’s the direction to go,” he continues.

Silenieks mentions anti-drone operations as the second direction to go.

“If you’re alone with a drone, but three drones are flying towards you, what are you going to do? It is similar if one manufactures bullets and the other body armor. When he shoots through the body armor, the body armor manufacturers think: “No problem, I’ll come up with a new one right away!”. Then they come up with a new and better one, then the other one shakes his head and after a while comes up with a new bullet to shoot that new body armor. It is such a continuous process, in which we, in turn, need engineers in Latvia. And this is the way to get them, to create the ability in schools to teach students to fly with drones, to create interest in them – to invent, screw up, chimera,” says Silenieks.
