According to sources, the algorithms that power TikTok are used across ByteDance’s spectrum of apps, making the sale of the US segment of the app highly unlikely.

According to Reuters sources, TikTok accounts for a small portion of ByteDance’s total revenue and daily active users.

So the parent company would, in the worst case scenario, suspend the app in the US rather than sell it to a local buyer. The shutdown will have limited impact on ByteDance’s business, while the company will not have to abandon its core algorithm, the sources said.

Previously, the US Congress passed and President Joe Biden signed a law to ban TikTok, which has 170 million users in the United States, unless ByteDance sells it. In the meantime, the head of “TikTok” Shou Dziču indicated that the company will challenge the new law in court.
