A historic house stands near Rātsupes in Bolderāja, which has now remained neglected due to neglect. On Saturday night, it caught fire for seemingly no reason, and firefighters had to save what was left of it.

“I heard something, but I don’t know. Some of the children were said to have fallen in,” says the resident of the house next door.

It would indeed not be difficult for unemployed youths to get into the property. The door stands open, and the drawn fence is folded. But it is not yet clear whether the fire caused this time was intentional. It could just as well have been accidentally dropped by a vagrant.

“On Saturday at 9:33 p.m., a call was received to Lielupes Street in Riga, where a 10-square-meter wall and internal stairs were on fire in an unmaintained two-story building. The work at the scene ended at 23.26.”

The future fate of the building is unclear. It is divided into apartment properties and belongs to a legal entity, but its restoration is hardly economically justified. Already in 2018, the Riga City Council declared the house a category A slum, which is actually an environmentally degrading object.
