The Italian Defense Minister calls on the West to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine

--

Crosetto’s calls contradict what he said in November 2023 – the minister then emphasized that “the time has not yet come” for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

The minister claimed that the sanctions against Russia have not been effective and added that “we can only solve this crisis by involving everyone – first with a ceasefire and then with peace.”

At the same time, Croceto confirmed that Italy will continue to supply weapons to Ukraine. Military aid will help Ukrainians to provide the right conditions in which to call for a ceasefire and peace talks, said the minister.

Ukrainian officials have also said that a Ukrainian victory on the battlefield is currently unlikely. In an interview with “The Economist” in early May 2024, the deputy director of Ukraine’s military intelligence service, Vadim Skibitsky, stated that such wars “can only end with agreements.”

On the other hand, Serhiy Nikiforov, the press representative of the Office of the President of Ukraine, stated on May 2, 2024 that Ukraine will hold a peace summit in Switzerland. After the end of the summit, its participants will agree on a common negotiating position and hand it over to Russia.

The Swiss government announced that Russia would not be invited “at this stage of the negotiations”.
