On Tuesday, April 23, the second round of elections for the members of the Judicial Ethics Commission and the Judicial Qualification Board of the Latvian Conference of Judges took place. Senator Sanita Osipova was elected to the Judges’ Ethics Commission, and Judge Iveta Salaka, chairwoman of the Zemgale District Court, was elected to the Judges’ Qualification Board.

It has already been reported that on April 23, 2024 the second round of elections for the members of the judges’ self-governing institutions of the non-attendance conference of judges of Latvia had to be held, because in the first round of elections, none of the candidates nominated by the judges of the Supreme Court was elected as a member of the Judges’ Qualification Board and as a member of the Judges’ Ethics Commission.

In the first round of elections of the non-attendance conference of Latvian judges, which took place on April 15 and 16, 2024, five judges were elected as members of the Judicial Ethics Commission – Judge Uldis Apsītis of the Civil Affairs Court of Riga Regional Court, Anita Misiuna, Judge of the Civil Affairs Court of Zemgale Regional Court, Līga Biksiniec-Martinova, Judge of the Administrative District Court, Gita Zenfa, Judge of the Zemgale District Court and President of the Riga City Court, Judge Anda Kraukle.

In total, 405 Latvian judges participated in the election of candidates for the position of members of judges’ self-governing institutions on April 23, 2024.

The Conference of Judges is a self-governing institution of judges, which is convened by the Council of Justice at least once a year. Judges of district (city) courts, regional courts and the Supreme Court take part in the conference.

The Rules of the Conference of Judges approved by the Council of Justice stipulates that the Conference of Judges can also take place in absentia, using information technology.
