Also, the State Environmental Service estimated that in the first three months of this year, 1,105 messages were received in the “Environmental SOS” app, which is almost half more than in the same period last year. Of all the reports received, about 75% are about littering the environment with various types of waste.

Also this year, residents of Riga and Pieriga have been the most active in reporting in the app, and the municipalities and forest managers of these administrative territories have actively dealt with the received reports. Less than 40% of the reports received this year have been resolved, that is, the territories have been cleaned, VVD informed.

The head of the VVD Operational Coordination Center, Elmārs Jasinskis, explained that illegally dumped construction debris, furniture, electrical goods and household waste are still found in the forests, which significantly and negatively affect the cleanliness and quality of the environment.

“At the same time, each of us can be a guardian of the environment by keeping the surroundings clean and tidy,” he expressed.

The environmental service stated that – if environmental littering were to be eradicated, it would give an opportunity in the coming years not to fight with littered areas, but to improve the environment during cleaning, to plant trees and bushes, as well as to introduce other landscape improvements.

The VVD also invited residents to download the “Environment SOS” app on their phones and report construction debris or bulky waste found in nature. Also, cleaners who already have the app on their phones should make sure to download the latest available version of the app to successfully submit a report.
