Tomorrow, the government will decide on the redistribution of funding to support the allocation of additional state budget funding for the shooting of foreign films in Latvia for the project applications included in the reserve list of the 6th round of selection. Additional state funding in the amount of 2,984,598 euros is required in 2024 to support the six projects included in the reserve list.

“Equivalent support tools for film shooting exist in almost all European countries, as proven by international studies. Shooting a film in a particular country creates an economic investment and contributes to the recognition of the country, city or some other location, as well as increases its international prestige. The support program is under the management of the Ministry of Culture ( 2012-2021), the co-financing mechanism for filming foreign films in Latvia has been successful and has attracted more than EUR 45 million of foreign film production support, while co-financing for these projects has been granted in the amount of no more than EUR 8 million for the successful operation of the program, since 2022 (when the Agency takes over the management of the support program), the production intensity of foreign projects has increased significantly, reaching the export of services in the amount of at least EUR 20 million”, says the draft order.

The 6th round of the 2024 state budget co-financing competition for shooting foreign films in Latvia was announced between November 13, 2023 and December 13, 2023.

In 2024, the available state budget co-financing for the shooting of foreign films in Latvia is EUR 721,700, taking into account the co-financing agreement concluded in 2023 for the shooting of one film in 2023 and 2024. In the framework of the 6th selection round, seven project applications were submitted, with one of them – the co-financing recipient SIA “CINEVILLA FILMS” – an agreement was concluded for the co-financing of the film project in the amount of EUR 639,500, while six projects are included in the reserve list (see table “Reserve list included project submissions of the 6th round” in section 3, point 6.2).

For the six project submissions included in the reserve list, the total required state budget co-financing amounts to EUR 3,066,798. At the same time, the amount available to the Agency for project submissions included in the reserve list of co-financing is EUR 82,200, thus the additional necessary funding for the shooting of foreign films in the 6th round of 2024 amounts to EUR 2,984,598.
