In an uplifting atmosphere, Rekava High School experienced a historic moment – the old apple orchard was restored.

Educators, parents, graduates, current and future students jointly planted more than 30 different fruit trees and berry trees – apple trees, pears, plums, blackcurrants and currants.

“We plant pears so that we can study at Rekova secondary school and then eat pears, come to the garden. Then they will definitely remember that they planted,” said Una, a preschool teacher’s assistant at Rekova secondary school. Asked if the children like pears, she said: “I think so! In Launaga, they really like having pears, so we eat them all.”

Linda, the representative of the parents, said: “I am planting an apple tree from the parents of the whole school. We found the apple tree ourselves and brought it. I think that the apple tree is a symbol of goodness and the future.”

The old apple orchard with an area of half a hectare, where previously there were more than 100 different fruit trees and bushes, was almost 70 years old. With reference to the locals and the “Kotiņi” farm, the orchard has been improved to experience a “second breath”.

“I think that we will continue to plant specific varieties. Let’s see how we will do with this – as a plant. We will use it in the cooktop and for self-realization. Perhaps also for gifts,” said Zhanna Maksimova, director of Rekava High School.

“It’s very good, at least one more tidy place. It was very overgrown here in recent years,” added Anita, a 9th grade teacher at Rekava High School.

The fruit tree garden has been a cherished dream of the school for a long time, but its realization has always been postponed. Enthusiasts of the association “Real Adventure” have been organizing the campaign “Let’s plant Latvia with fruit trees” for the third year, during which 18 Latvian nursing homes, educational institutions, care centers and orphanages have already been planted. Likewise, fruit trees were also planted in the Rekava nursing home and in the territory of the church.

“When you have a goal and a real plan, how you will implement it, then this one was like that – “sometime already”. Then there is one call and practically within a month it has gone like this [klikšķa ātrumā]because all the forces joined in,” said the school director.

“It is grown by your own hands, it is planted, watered, cared for from your own heart, and then the fruits are also given. They are also in a spiritual sense, when you do not plant only for a short time, or today, but also for the future,” said Lukas, the author of the campaign idea. Mairis Marcinkevičs.

The organizers of the campaign said – everyone is invited to restore or establish a new orchard on their side. It has both practical and spiritual value.
