If Donald Trump is re-elected as the president of the United States of America (USA), it creates a certain risk that the US support for Ukraine will decrease, however, the withdrawal of the US from NATO is very unlikely – this is what the former president of the country Vaira Vīke-Freiberga said in the program “Kāpē”. She compared Trump’s frequent changes of position on international issues to a windmill that spins wherever it comes to mind. In Vike-Freiberg’s opinion, this is better than another former US president, Barack Obama, who simply turned his back on Europe.
Vīke-Freiberga, however, assessed the rumors that Trump might withdraw from NATO as very unlikely. “I personally doubt it very much, because Mr. Trump declares a lot and three hours later he declares the opposite. He is like a weathervane – he turns in all directions as he thinks. It is scary on the one hand, but on the other hand you could say – a kind of consolation. If he says something that seems really absurd to us, we are left with hope that he will change his mind,” she said.
