Mobile operators have started to disable third-generation communication network technologies, or 3G, because it is necessary to provide higher quality to customers and free up frequencies for next-generation networks, service providers tell Latvijas Televīzija.

“Last year, 3G technology was turned off in Kurzeme region, and this year at the beginning of this year in Daugavpils, Aizkraukle, Augšdaugava, Bauskas, Jēkabpils, Līvāni, Preiļi and Varakļani regions,” Ilze Saulīte, Director of LMT Private Service Service, told television.

“Tele2” plans to start this process in the next few days. Oskars Fīrmanis, the company’s public relations manager, says: “The end of April will be the moment when the first 3G network stations will be switched off. The first parishes where this will happen are in Ludza, Madona, Alūksne and Balvu counties.”

Although most residents will not feel this transition, mobile operators indicate that the change will affect those residents who are still using equipment that only has 3G and no 4G or 5G.

That is, if the customer is currently using an old SIM card or a device with which he uses slow 3G Internet, after turning off this technology, the Internet will no longer be available on this device.

3G disconnection can also cause problems for those who live on the border between 3G, 4 and 5G.
