Kalkūnes SES is located in Kalkūnes parish, Augšdaugava county, 10 kilometers from the center of Daugavpils. With an installed capacity of 13.3 MW, it will produce at least 13,500 MWh of renewable energy annually. The new power station was designed to be connected to the distribution infrastructure so that residents and businesses could consume the generated electricity.

Almost 10 million euros of Latvian capital have been invested in the development of Kalkūnes VVD, including 4.7 million euros co-financed by Swedbank. The owner of the new solar power plant is the local investment fund Merito First Sustainable Energy Fund. Last year, together with the developer of renewable energy projects, Saules Energy built four new solar power plants in Ziloba, Bringoj, Inčokalne and Karnikava with a total capacity of 25 MW. By the fall of 2024, three more projects will be completed in Koknēz, Cēsis and Valmiera.

“Eight new stations will produce at least 70,000 MWh of electricity annually, supplying green energy to more than 35,000 households throughout Latvia,” said Mikus Janvars, co-founder and managing partner of Merito Partners.

The general contractor of the “Kalkūne SES” project is the Latvian company “KL Systems”, which has many years of experience in the construction of industrial solar energy parks in Europe and elsewhere in the world.

The investment fund stated that in the development and operation of the solar power plant, much attention was paid to the preservation and protection of the biological diversity of the environment. The site features a natural meadow with specially designed insect and animal habitats and will eventually be used by local farmers’ bee colonies and flocks of sheep.

Saules Energy is a developer of renewable energy projects in Latvia. The company’s goal is to make investments in environmentally friendly technologies profitable and to serve a wide range of society. Merito Sustainable Energy Fund 1 is managed by Merito Partners, a private equity investment company operating in Latvia and the surrounding region.
