Today, May 4, the Saeima is holding a ceremonial session dedicated to the Independence Day of the Republic of Latvia. You can follow it live on the “Delfi” portal.
The President of the State, former Presidents of the State, former Speakers of the Saeima, members of the Cabinet of Ministers, members of the Supreme Council who voted for the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia, foreign diplomatic corps and heads of representative offices of international organizations in Latvia are traditionally invited to participate in the session.
On May 4, 1990, thousands of people stood in front of the parliament building all day, watching the vote. Deputies who went to a rally in Daugavmala after the vote on the restoration of Latvia’s independence were greeted with flowers and loud cheers. Communists and Interfrontians, who refused to participate in the vote, left the parliament building through the back door.
