A book about the Holocaust in Latgale will be presented at the Russian Culture Center

On April 5 of this year at At 16.00, the presentation of the book “Holocaust in Latgale: historiography and memories” by Daugavpils local historian Josif Ročko will take place in the Russian Culture Center of the Unity House (Varšavas Street 14), during which you will also have the opportunity to meet the author of the book and ask him questions of interest.

In this book, in Latvian and Russian, the historiographical sources and memories of the Holocaust in Latgale are collected and researched, clarifying the changes in the understanding of the Holocaust and comparing the studies of different national schools on this topic.“The book is about the process of understanding and researching the Holocaust that happened in Latgale. It is the first attempt to conduct a historiographical study on this topic in connection with the Latgale region”, – notes the author of the publication. The creation of the publication was financially supported by the municipality of Daugavpils, the restitution fund of the Latvian Jewish community, the society “Memory and Help” and the museum “Jews in Daugavpils and Latgale”.

Josif Ročko (born in 1948 in Daugavpils) – teacher, regional researcher, publicist. Daugavpils University graduate (1973), master’s degree in pedagogy, political economy, history. Founder and director of Daugavpils Jewish Community Museum. Knight of the Order of the Three Stars. Author and co-author of many articles, brochures, several books on Jewish history in Latgale and Daugavpils. His father survived the Daugavpils ghetto.

The event is organized by the structural unit “Centre of Russian culture” of the municipal institution “Vienības nams” of Daugavpils state city.
