Today, our country is celebrating one of the most important days in its history – the Independence Day of the Republic of Latvia. If November 18, 1918 is the birthday of our country, then on May 4, 1990, the Latvian people, despite the long years of suffering and historical tragedies, proved their unbreakable desire for freedom and independence! It is not only the day when justice was restored, but also an important turning point in people’s awareness that we are a united nation that has the right to decide its own future.

Living in an independent country is not only a privilege, for which many of our ancestors gave their lives, but also a huge responsibility. To be responsible for your own wins and losses, genius revelations and mistakes, correct prosperity strategy and shortcomings is a very difficult choice. However, the Latvian people made this choice 106 years ago and then reaffirmed it 34 years ago. And this means that we, currently living in Latvia, should be worthy of this choice!

On this holiday, I would like to remind you how important the unity of our people was in those decisive moments! And today, when the world has once again been gripped by various upheavals, it is very important for us to remember that the strength of our country lies in unity, respect for one another and in the awareness that we are all Latvia!

On this holiday, I wish a lifetime of sunshine and a dignified future for our country! God bless Latvia!

Andrejs Elksniņš, chairman of the municipal council of Daugavpils state city
