Due to the 750th anniversary of the founding of the city of Amsterdam, on Saturday, May 4, pilgrims from the capital of Holland came to visit the Pope. Its beginnings are connected with the Catholic Church and faith.

An important event in the history of Amsterdam was the Eucharistic miracle in 1345. The Pope praised the contribution of the people of this city today, who actively work for the poor and migrants, as well as those addicted to toxic substances, in collaboration with the Sisters of Mother Teresa of Calcutta and the community of Saint Egidio.

“Amsterdam is a city where people of many nationalities live and are called to live as brothers and sisters,” Francis said. He added that churches are places where believers from different social classes and cultures meet. The Holy Father wished that the inhabitants of this beautiful city could live and work with God’s blessing; so that, being enlivened and supported by the Eucharist, we can joyfully testify to faith and concrete love for our neighbor; may they continue to promote brotherhood and solidarity among all Amsterdammers.

The Pope wished the Dutch pilgrims and all the inhabitants of the capital to the Virgin Mary, Mother of all people, to protect them in faith, hope and love. The Bishop of Rome gave them his apostolic blessing and invited them to pray for him.
