Foreign media reports that the European Union (EU) is preparing to launch a new investigation against “Meta” for processing content related to the European Parliament (EP) elections. European officials are concerned about “misleading ads and false political content” that could appear on Meta platforms in the run-up to the June 8 EP elections.

According to the “Financial Times” newspaper, the EU has also expressed concern about Russia’s “efforts to undermine the upcoming EP elections”, as well as the campaigns of other countries with the aim of interfering in something carried out and influencing the election results.

In recent years, social networks have played a huge role in political events. Facebook in particular is a fertile ground for misinformation to spread. The EU has announced that if Meta is found to have violated the Digital Services Act in connection with the spread of disinformation related to the EP elections, the company could be subject to a large fine.

EU officials are also “very concerned” about Meta’s plan to shut down CrowdTangle in August. It has been widely used by researchers and fact-checkers for years to study how content spreads on Facebook and Instagram.
