The President instructs the Prosecutor General to investigate the allegations of possible interference in the election process – Events

On April 25, the State President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Latvia Juri Stukānas in the Riga Palace to discuss this year’s On April 24, news about possible interference in the Saeima elections in 2014 appeared in the public media.

The right provided for in Article 101 of the Constitution of every citizen of Latvia to participate in the activities of the state and local governments in the manner prescribed by law, including the right to participate in elections, serves as a guarantor of democratic existence and is aimed at ensuring the legitimacy of the state system. Any interference in the conduct of elections in a democratic legal state is inadmissible. Reports of possible electoral irregularities or possible corruption should be investigated with utmost care.

Therefore, in accordance with the second part of Article 16 of the Law on the Prosecutor’s Office, the President asks the Prosecutor General to take the necessary measures and to check whether the state security institutions and law enforcement authorities have received any news or information about attempts to influence the results of the Saeima elections in 2014. During the meeting, the President instructed the Prosecutor General to conduct an investigation and to inform the President and Latvian society about its results.
