“We are building the main line and the main line must go through Riga. The fact that the Latvian government is currently unable to make a conceptual decision is one thing, but there are no other options – the route must pass through Riga,” he counters rumors that piles are being laid in the Daugava too early, because the first route may not pass through Riga at all.

It has already been reported that the Ministry of Transport (MoT) signed an agreement with the European Climate Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) on Monday for funding 51.55 million euros to strengthen the military capacity of the railway project “Rail Baltica”, the LETA agency was informed by the ministry.

Among them, the most important activities included in the contract are the construction and construction supervision of the first phase of the “Rail Baltica” dual-purpose bridge over the Daugava, for the construction of a new two-level crossing over the Daugava in Salaspils and Ķekava counties, according to the ministry.

During the construction works, it is planned to build supports for the construction of the basic structure of the bridge, which will consist of seven supports in the river and two end supports. The bridge construction project is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and construction will begin in the next construction season.

The combined bridge over the Daugava is part of the main line of the “Rail Baltica” railway infrastructure and one of the most complicated objects of the “Rail Baltica” railway infrastructure.

The construction of the bridge will be ensured by SIA “Eiropas dzęszała lijnas”, which is responsible for the construction of “Rail Baltica” on the territory of Latvia, as well as the joint venture of the Baltic States AS “RB Rail”, to which the MoU has delegated the technical competence of the project.

The funding was obtained from the 2023 Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) third call for Military Mobility, the results of which were announced by the European Commission in January of this year.

The MoU adds that EUR 5.29 million in CEIS funding has already been received for strengthening the military capacity of Rail Baltica in the first call for Military Mobility.

With the received funding, the design and design supervision of the combined Daugava bridge highway section, the design of the Salaspils multimodal cargo terminal, as well as the design of the Riga Airport cargo park and its surrounding infrastructure have been ensured.

LETA already announced that CINEA approved funding in the amount of 78.8 million euros for the implementation of three transport infrastructure projects in Latvia in the third call for Military Mobility.

The financing was granted by “Rail Baltica” for the implementation of the project, the reconstruction of the bridge over Salaca and the reconstruction of the fourth platform of Riga Airport to the municipality of Limbažu County.

The Memorandum of Understanding granted funding in the amount of 51.6 million euros to the activities of the Rail Baltica project for the integration of military mobility requirements. 19.67 million euros were allocated to the reconstruction project of the fourth platform of Riga Airport, ensuring its compliance with civil and military requirements. On the other hand, the municipality of Limbažu region was granted co-financing of 7.54 million euros for the reconstruction of the bridge over Salac in Salacgrīva, which will ensure its dual use for civil and military needs.
