Seven debutants are included in the Latvian national team, while 17 hockey players are from last year’s “bronze” team. The average weight of the Latvian national team is 89.76 kilograms, and in this indicator our national team is the heaviest among all the teams in the tournament. Also in terms of height in centimeters, the Latvian team stands out and is the fourth tallest among all championship units.

Speaking of potential team leaders, goalkeeper Elvis Merzlikin, who represents the NHL club Columbus Blue Jackets, should be singled out. In a game with different formations, the defenders will be of great importance, and in the numerical majority, one of the key players on the blue line could be Jānis Jaks, who represents the Czech championship team from Litvinov. On the other hand, one of the leaders of the attack could be Rihards Bukarts, who started this season in Switzerland, but ended it in the Czech Republic, in the Vitkovice team.

In general, a number of Latvian hockey players have represented Czech clubs. After the first practice, national team coach Harijs Vītoliņš mentioned that in his opinion the quality of the ice in Ostrava is not the best, while the Latvian hockey players who played in the local championship consoled him that it was almost the best ice available in the hockey arenas of this country.

Although the fans of Latvia are always loud and visible, in the first match against Poland, the fans of our opponents could have the upper hand in the stands.

Latvia will play the second match in the tournament against the French hockey players, whose team will not have the brightest star – Elvja Merzlikina’s teammate in the “Blue Jackets” unit – Aleksandrs Texier. The French Hockey Federation has had problems with the insurance of his contract.
