The Riga Psychiatry and Narcology Center (RPNC) together with the Latvian Psychiatrists’ Association has started a series of free informational and educational seminars “Brave about dementia”. The second seminar of the cycle – “Adjustment of life, environment and household for a patient with dementia” will be held on May 14 at 15.00 – 17.00, Tvaika iela 2 and will be led by occupational therapist Anda Berķe.

Anda Berķe: “Persons with dementia change their psycho-emotional state and daily perception, thus affecting the performance of daily activities – productivity, self-care and free time; they tend to lose interest in things and activities they used to enjoy, have difficulty concentrating for a long time, expressing themselves, performing more complex actions. A person with dementia becomes increasingly dependent on others. This can lead to feelings of hopelessness, depression and guilt. They need peer support. As long as possible, one should try to maintain the person’s involvement in daily activities, preserving the existing skills, allowing him to function on his own, to perform even the smallest, simplest activity – in a safe or adapted environment. How to create this environment – we will talk about it in the seminar. “

The series of seminars “Brave about dementia” is organized by the Latvian Psychiatric Association together with the Riga Psychiatry and Narcology Center. It is co-financed within the framework of the Riga City Community Integration Program and is intended for a wide range of society.

As part of the cycle, a total of three seminars will be held in April and May. The seminars will be held in person, in the conference hall of the new Outpatient Center of Riga Psychiatry and Narcology Center, Tvaika Street 2. The seminars are free! They are filmed and video recordings of all seminars will be published on the RPNC website and YouTube account, where anyone interested can watch them at their convenience.

The recording of the first seminar “Courage about dementia – what it is and what to do next: life with a diagnosis”, which took place on May 30, can be viewed on the Youtube account of the Riga Psychiatry and Narcology Center .

On the other hand, the in-person visitors of each seminar not only have the opportunity to ask questions they are interested in, but also get the book “What you should know about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia”.
