The Latvian women’s football team is preparing for the qualification of the European Championship

Head coach Roman Kvačovs has included players from five domestic clubs, Austria, Iceland, Turkey and Poland.

21-year-old defender Fanija Mežecka received her first call-up to the national team, while midfielder Anastasija Čemirtāne returned to the national team for the first time since 2021.

Compared to the previous call, Katrīna Danilova, Sofija Garanča and Taisija Smirnova from Liepāja have returned to the list of candidates, but Ligita Tumāne, Sofija Gergeležu, Marina Telukeviča, Aleksandra Sofija Mairna and Amelia Lipšanae have not been called.

Among the candidates are also defender Anna Flakse of “Liepājas football school”, Karlīna Miksone from Niece, who plays in Poland, and Liepājas a Mettian woman Signia Schoenberg.

The Latvian national team will play the qualification tournament in the C league in the same group with North Macedonia, Moldova and Slovenia, performing a two-round tournament.

Our team also played against Moldova last year in the Nations League, winning 5-0 at home, but drawing 3-3 away.

On the other hand, they crossed paths with the North Macedonian women in 2021 and 2022 in the selection of the World Cup – losing 1:4 in Riga and 2:3 away.

The winners of the first two positions in each subgroup of the A League will have an automatic place in the final tournament, which will take place in Switzerland.

The fate of the remaining seven road tickets will be decided in two elimination rounds, which will take place between October and December.

The winners of the five subgroups and the three best of the second-place finishers will qualify for the “play-off” stage of the C League.

In addition, teams from the C League will compete for promotion to the B League for the next UEFA Nations League and qualification cycle.

The winner of each sub-group of the C League will get such a promotion.
