Women’s national hockey team gets an important victory after defeat / Diena

Latvian ice hockey players played in Group A of the 2nd Division last year, and after winning the first place, they have moved up one level. Women’s WC is the top group with ten teams (Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Switzerland, USA, China, Denmark, Germany, Japan and Sweden), followed by Division 1 Group A with six teams (South Korea, Hungary, France, Austria, the Netherlands and Norway). Latvia is playing in the third strongest women’s hockey tournament this year.

The first opponents, Slovakian ice hockey players, fell out of Group A of Division 1 last year, but have already taken two steps to return to the previous level. The Slovakian national team also easily overcame the barrier of Slovenia (4:0). The primary task for Latvian ice hockey players is to keep their place in Group B of Division 1. Italy had lost to Great Britain (0:1) on the first day of the matches, so the three points obtained in the second round of matches are important to fulfill the minimum task. An important role in the success was played by goalkeeper Kristiana Apsite, who saved 42 of 44 shots. The Italian hockey players were superior in terms of shots made by 44 to 30. Aiming for a place in the top three in the tournament, the next game with Slovenia will be important. Before losing 0:4 to the Slovakians on the first day of the games, the Slovenian ice hockey players beat Poland 4:1.
