State President Edgars Rinkēvičs will participate in the 34th anniversary of the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia on Saturday, May 4, LETA was informed by the State President’s Office (VPL).
It is planned that at 10:30 a.m. the solemn flower-laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument will take place, while at 12:00 p.m. Rinkēvičs will take part in the Saeima’s ceremonial session.
At 3 p.m. in Riga Palace, the ceremony of presenting the highest Latvian state awards – the Order of the Three Stars, the Order of Viestura and the Cross of Recognition – will take place. It is planned that the concert “Music in the Riga Palace. Ilona Bagele and the jazz orchestra “Mirāža”” will take place at 5 p.m.
VPK states that this will be the second concert that the President of the State has renewed as a tradition in the Riga Palace. The concert will honor people for their work for Latvia. This time, medical staff from Kuldīga Hospital, Balva and Gulbene Hospital Association, Jēkabpils Regional Hospital and the Palliative Care Department of “Biķernieki” hospital are invited to the Riga Palace.
Recipients of the highest state awards, members of the May 4th Declaration Club and Latvian cultural figures who celebrated important life anniversaries this year and whom the President has met in Riga and regional visits are also invited to the concert.
34 years ago, on May 4, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Latvian SSR adopted the declaration “On the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia”, which renewed the Constitution adopted in 1922. After five decades, the Republic of Latvia became an independent and democratic country again.
