The head coach of the Swedish national team, Sam Hallam, announced the squad for the world championship yesterday with 18 NHL players in the line-up. If the league’s third most productive defender and captain of Nashville “Predators” Roman Jozi (23+62 in 82 games) will go to help Switzerland, then the two most productive attackers Fochberja (48+46) and Nykvist (23+52) are not and will not be in the Swedish team this spring. Fochbery already refused last week, but Nyqvist’s refusal was publicly announced yesterday morning.
“This was a long season. The body needs rest, and I also want to give priority to the family, which was added to our third daughter during the season,” to the newspaper Expressen said the 34-year-old Nyqvist, who, like Fochberry, has not participated in the world championships since 2018. Nykvist has 19 (15+4) points in three tournaments and 27 games, while Foshberjs has collected 12 (10+2) points in two tournaments and 12 games. In the first round of the Stanley Cup, Nashville lost 2-4 to the Vancouver “Canucks” represented by Teodor Blüger and Artur Shilov.
There were three Swedes in the top 14 defensemen in the NHL – fifth place for Victor Hedman (11+63), tenth place for Rasmus Dahlins (20+39) and fourteenth place for the league’s most expensive defenseman Erik Karlsson (11+45), who will go to the world championship after a 12-year break and will do so as a captain. 33-year-old Karlsson has 11 (4+7) points in 17 games. Sweden will start the world championship tomorrow against the USA, but will meet Latvia on May 18. Germany, Slovakia, France, Kazakhstan and Poland will also be in the group.
