Miloš Forman’s romantic comedy “The Loves of a Blond” (1965) will be screened in three screenings from May 17 to 19 at the Kino Bize cinema. The film, which earned Forman his first Oscar nomination, will close the program of Classic Cinema Nights dedicated to the Czech New Wave of the 1960s. On Saturday evening, before the screening, an introductory lecture by film critic Agnese Lipska.

The famous Czech film director Miloš Forman based the film’s story on one of his past events. The filming location was chosen in a small Czech town with a shoe factory, mostly attracting local people with no previous acting experience, relying in many places on improvised dialogues and applying documentary filmmaking approaches.

“While making the film “Blonde Loves”, I realized that by merging professional actors with non-professionals, both parties benefited. But it was very important to attract actors who could adapt to situations where non-professional actors behaved naturally. You have to be an excellent actor to get into a scene with people who behave as they normally would,” said Forman about the filming of the film.

This became an important film in the future career of Miloš Forman. It allowed him to break out internationally, earning his first Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 1966.

The romantic comedy tells the story of a small factory town with an inexorable statistic of sixteen women for every man. Andula is desperate for love until a playful pianist comes to town to quench her longing. Love and humor accompany Andula on her journey from first romantic relationships to inevitable disappointments.
