“The environment in art universities is different than where you are taught astrophysics or information technology, because the boundaries of the relationship between students and lecturers are much smaller,” explains the political scientist, historian and Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences in the TV24 program “Dienas personality ar Velta Puriņa” leading researcher Gatis Krūmiņš, who himself graduated from the Academy of Music.
Commenting on the harassment scandal at the Jāzeps Vītolas Academy of Music of Latvia (JVLMA), Krūmiņš emphasizes that the boundaries have been broken and “the question is the responsibility on both sides – both the student’s and the teacher’s side, well, to keep it equal, not to cross its boundaries”.
“What worries me now with all this is that we are now doing this kind of lynching – we are reaching out and now we are going back in history… Now we are making the same mistake as it was with the check bags. We kept it hidden somewhere… We should have some kind of a la lustration. Give those people a chance that they can say sorry, they can tell! They can say: yes, we have understood, we have made a mistake, and then we start life from different foundations”, political scientist and historian Krūmiņš expresses his vision.
“Not – report, report, then we will judge them there! Well, let’s try to get out of that situation in a civilized way,” says political scientist and historian Krūmiņš.
