On April 27, the seventeenth Great Talk was successfully held throughout Latvia. High responsiveness and involvement of residents was observed in 1149 cleaning sites. On this occasion, both garbage collection and beautification, as well as cleaning of basements, were carried out.

Scavengers found tires, furniture, construction debris, various household items in nature, as well as quite a few metal objects, tires and bottles. On the other hand, a large-format painting, about 40 lamp televisions were found in the cleaning of basements in Riga, and a bar installed at an unknown time was demolished in the shelter of Siegfried Anna Meierovics. Various household items and a gas mask were found in the cellars in Ogre. Young Guardsmen, National Guardsmen, as well as soldiers of NATO allied forces also participated in the talks.

Vita Jaunzeme, head of the Great Cleanup, emphasizes: “It is a great joy to see that fellow human beings inspire each other to do good deeds – you could feel it today while cleaning, and it inspires. We Latvians need such gatherings, they are especially important at times when it seems that the world around us is changing too rapidly. We are able to inspire each other, help each other and maintain hope and inner strength. Sincere thanks to everyone who went to clean up today and to everyone who takes care of our land and nature around us on a daily basis! A special greeting and thanks to all the coordinators of the talka municipalities, who take care of the events of the Great Talka in the municipalities on a voluntary basis every year. “

The Great Talk is organized by the association “Pēdas LV” in cooperation with the Latvian State Forests, the Union of Local Governments of Latvia, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, and the Association of European Latvians. Supported by: Rimi, BluOr Bank, Mežpils alus, Spilva, Getliņi Eko, DHL, Latvian State Radio and Television Center.

About Liela Talka: Liela Talka is Latvia’s largest non-governmental movement, which is based on voluntary participation in environmental cleaning, recovery and beautification, creating cohesion, positivity and a sense of a job well done. The tradition of the Great Cleanup began 16 years ago – with the cleanup on September 13, 2008, which was a gift from the population to Latvia on its 90th birthday. Over the course of 16 years, approximately 500,000 participants have participated in the cleanup, and compared to the first years of the cleanup, the amount of waste has decreased by more than half. In recent years, Liela Talka emphasizes the close connection between environmental education and the environment and human health more and more, as well as more and more landscape and yard beautification works.
