Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan has spoken out against changing the results of the Australian GP after Fernando Alonso received a 20-second penalty and was dropped from sixth to eighth.

Alonso was penalized for potentially dangerous driving when the Aston Martin braked faster than expected on the final lap before a corner George Russell failed to predict and crashed. Jordan is not happy about the situation.

“I was really disappointed when I was watching the race,” says Jordan. “I thought Alonso would have finished sixth, but then he was dropped several positions.”

The Aston Martin team represented by Alonso was created several years ago on the basis of the “Jordan” unit that he owns, after several changes of owners and names. Jordan recalls that Bernie Ecclestone, the head of the F1 championship at the time, tried to prevent the results from being changed after the finish.

“I remember for Bernie it was one of those things that he hated,” Jordan says. “He used to tell the judges not to try to submit altered results half an hour or an hour after the race. Because it’s not fair to television and everybody else, and it just confuses everybody.”

Jordan believes Alonso should have been penalized differently: “If they felt something was wrong, they could have given him a two-place penalty for the next race. Why the hell did it have to be done like this? This is silly. Race results are race results. And if there are punishments, then they should apply to the future.”
