The armed forces continue the military strengthening of our eastern border. Digging of some roads has started today, which will be followed by the creation of anti-tank ditches.

“Right now, in the background, we can see how one of the border roads has been dug up. We, the armed forces, have already identified a number of such roads, which we recommend to be dug up already in peacetime, to ensure that no mechanized unit could use these roads in the event of a war,” says Kaspars Lazdiņš, engineer inspector of the NBS Joint Staff.

However, digging up the road alone is not enough to deter a potential aggressor. Therefore, in parallel, the tractor equipment of the armed forces, in the vicinity of the Russian border, today also started building the first anti-tank ditches.

Although at the moment, the prettnak ditch is more like an ordinary sand pit, in fact, specific technical requirements have been met when creating it. It should be at least 3-4 meters wide, deep enough. Also, the sand piles must be on the defensive side, so that when the enemy attacks, the sand piles do not simply push the sand piles into the ditch and drive over it.

In the future, the armed forces plan to involve private companies in the creation of anti-tank ditches, so that civilian tractor drivers also learn the correct construction of such an obstacle and, within a possible X hours, can do it anywhere without the involvement of the army. In addition, other tank traps – the so-called dragon’s teeth – will soon be deployed on the border.

We have certain sectors where we will do that. At the moment, the market research has already started, there are merchants who have expressed their readiness to make these dragon’s teeth, the first contracts will be signed next month. It will be delivered and then our combat engineers will place it where it is needed.

The construction of these defensive structures is only a small part of the plan to strengthen the eastern border, on which more than 300 million euros are planned to be spent in the next five years. In addition to various obstacles, ammunition warehouses are also planned to be built in Latgale. The armed forces, however, continue to emphasize that border mines are not considered in peacetime.
