Spying devices were found in a meeting room of the Polish government in Katowice, an official of the Polish security services announced on Tuesday.
The devices were found before the start of the government session, but it is not known how long they were there, said the official, who declined to speculate on the device’s origin.
“The State Defense Service, in cooperation with the Internal Security Agency, discovered and dismantled devices that could be used for eavesdropping in the room where the meeting of the Council of Ministers will be held today in Katowice,” Jacek Dobzinskis, the press representative of the security services, announced on the “X” platform, adding that the services continue investigation.
The Cabinet meeting was scheduled in Katowice, as Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was attending an economic conference there. Usually, weekly government meetings are held in Warsaw.
Dobzinski revealed to TVN24 that the devices were able to record both audio and video, but it is difficult to say whether they were installed several years ago and were not discovered earlier, or whether they were installed very recently.
Polish authorities announced in March that they had conducted searches related to suspicions of a Russian spy network in Poland. Authorities used intelligence provided to them by the Czech Republic.
Last month, a Russian history enthusiast was also detained in Poland, who is suspected of spying on the army of a European Union (EU) member state on behalf of the Kremlin.
