At least every fifth car sold in the world will be an electric car this year, according to the report “Global EV Outlook” published by the International Energy Agency on this year’s electric car market forecasts.

The report says that the increase in sales of electric cars is changing the car market, as well as significantly reducing the demand for petroleum products. Forecasts show that around 17 million electric cars could be sold worldwide annually. The data of the 1st quarter of this year show that sales have increased by 25% compared to the same time a year ago. If we open the brackets wider, in the first three months of this year about the same number of electric cars were sold as in the whole of 2020.

The greatest demand for these machines is predicted in China, where electric cars could make up to 45% of all cars sold. In absolute terms, this means around 10 million machines per year. In the US, the electric car market exceeds 10% market share, but in Europe, despite generally weaker demand for new cars, electric cars make up around 25% of the cars sold.

Although the biggest demand is still concentrated in China, the USA, and Europe, several new countries can be seen where electric cars are starting to gain their place – in Vietnam they make up 15% of the sold cars, in Thailand around 10% of the new car market.

The authors of the report also write that an accessible, reliable and fairly extensive public electric car charging infrastructure is one of the prerequisites for electric car sales to grow. Namely, the infrastructure must not lag behind the increase in the number of such cars on the streets.
