Previously known activists, supporters from the political environment and pro-Kremlin sentiments are currently acting restrained and understand that the actions of the services on May 9 regarding possible illegalities will be strict enough, State Police chief Armands Ruks admitted to journalists today after the meeting of the National Security Commission of the Saeima.

Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (JV) and Ruk had come to the commission meeting to report on security and risks on May 9.

The minister informed that there is currently no information about any possible organized provocations or illegally organized mass gatherings. At the same time, individual provocations in the context of the fact that Latvia is in a hybrid war are not excluded.

The police will especially strengthen their forces, including by attracting the men of the Special Tasks Battalion in Riga, Daugavpils and Salaspils, where any possible illegal activities or gatherings might take place. The head of the VP added that public events will not be allowed in cemeteries either, although individual laying of flowers is not prohibited.

Ruk informed that the Internet environment is regularly monitored and violators should expect that the police “may knock on the door” for the crimes committed there.

The Minister of the Interior also called on the citizens not to spread various May 9 greetings with prohibited symbols on social media, as the spreaders may face quite serious consequences.

Ruk also informed that the activists, supporters from the political environment and pro-Kremlin sentiments previously known to the law enforcement officers are currently “behaving restrained” and accordingly understand that the approach of the services in case of violations will be sufficiently strict. The police have already shown such a position in the so-called Russian presidential elections.

“They themselves have been informed that they are basically in sight. So we don’t expect any surprises here,” emphasized Ruk.

It has already been reported that the State Police and the State Security Service (VDD) will also work in an intensified mode on May 9 this year, when the Russian regime celebrates one of the most important holidays in its propaganda, monitoring the security situation throughout the country. The services are preparing for any scenario and will be ready to react not only on the specific date, but also in the days before and after, in order to prevent threats to public order and security, including the glorification and justification of criminal Russian aggression and war crimes.
