The State Police (SP) and the State Security Service are also working in an intensified mode this year, monitoring the security situation throughout the country in connection with May 9, in order to prevent threats to public order and security, including the glorification and justification of criminal Russian aggression and war crimes. The services started monitoring already today, it will continue until May 10.

On May 9, which is celebrated in the propaganda of the Kremlin regime as the so-called “Victory Day”, it is forbidden to carry out any public events that denigrate and threaten the values ​​of Latvia as a democratic and national state, divide society, glorify war, military aggression, totalitarianism or violence, as well as misrepresenting historical events.

The ban on holding events on May 9 is provided by the law adopted by the Saeima in 2023. VP representative: “We will definitely monitor and monitor very strictly. That’s it, vthere is no use of symbols of military aggression and totalitarian regimes in a public place, for which administrative responsibility is foreseen. Of course, also for justifying or glorifying war crimes, for which criminal responsibility is provided. We will monitor the situation to see if flowers are placed at the sites of Soviet monuments dismantled in previous years, because we also treat such actions as actions supporting military aggression.”

Although it is not prohibited to place individual flowers in burial places, the increased presence of the State Police in these places will not necessarily mean that residents will be provided with a convenient and coordinated approach. The task of the police is to prevent threats to public order and any glorification of aggression.

Also, it is prohibited to use any pyrotechnic products around the clock on May 9, as well as on May 10 until 7:00 a.m., even in cases where they are planned to be used, for example, during birthdays or other private celebrations. Zellis: “Of course, they are not related to the glorification of regimes, but in any case, the law remains one and all. On this date, as I said, from May 9 inclusive until May 10 at 7:00 a.m., the use of pyrotechnics is prohibited.”

Likewise, the services also invite citizens to evaluate provocative statements in the information room critically. The State Police states, although until today news about provocations have not been received, the services will especially monitor places where violations are possible. Zellis: “At the same time, a large resource of the Special Unit will also be involved, especially in the Latgale region and especially in Daugavpils, where we will also intensify monitoring of public order and security, and all the previously mentioned manifestations that could await us tomorrow. But I would also like to point out that in any case we are ready to react, anywhere in the territory of Latvia.”
