Ventspili is often called the flower capital of Latvia. With the planting of the first widows, the Ventspils spring flower season has opened. Although only this week Kurzemi has reached a truly spring temperature, a lot has already been done. Ventspils city gardeners invite you not to hesitate with planting the first spring flowers.
Inga Reinholde, master of PSIA “Ventspils beautification complex”: “For example, I already planted widows in my flower boxes at home two weeks ago. The widow is the flower that I was once taught at school, you can plant even in autumn, nothing bad will happen to it. If, for example, you plant it in a bed and there are some small minuses or even snow, it will be scorched, a little cracked, but then, when the sun shines, it will take its previous position.”
In general, it is planned to plant almost 6,000 spring flower seedlings in the beds and flower pots of the city of Ventspils this spring. As the first, a flowerbed is always traditionally prepared at the monument to the repressors of the Soviet regime, forming a bed in the colors of the Latvian flag. Shortly before Easter, the planting of flowers in the 86 flower pots located in the city was also completed. Reinhold: “The first thing we will do, and which I would recommend everyone to do at home, is to dig up all the holes where the tulips are planted with small hoes, fertilize with spring complex fertilizer, the highest indicator of which is nitrogen, so that the tulips have strength, the green mass is formed, after for that, we will plant trees along the edges.”
Widows, primroses, forget-me-nots and Asian gundegas are already blooming beautifully in pots, but the warm temperatures have also been welcomed by the bulbs planted in autumn. This spring, the 80 thousand tulips planted last fall, more than 19 thousand daffodils and one and a half thousand hyacinths will bloom in the beds. At the moment, crocuses are at their peak in Ventspils – nine and a half thousand spring-colored crocuses of different varieties are gradually opening their flower buds. You will find them in Jaunpilsės Square, Dzirnava Square, beds in Lielaja Prospekt and other places in Ventspils. As a result of the public procurement organized by the municipal authority “Ventspils Komunālā pārvalde”, the flowers were supplied this year by the company SIA “Sedumi”, while the planting of flowers is carried out by the municipality SIA “Ventspils labieekārtošanas kombināts”.
