The pilot’s initial thought was to return to Ādaži airfield, but when he realized that he would not get that far, he decided to make an emergency landing on the very busy Tallinn highway. The pilot’s colleague told what feelings a pilot might experience when experiencing such an event.

“Stress. Of course, surprise. But, I think it’s some seconds, maybe, tenths. And then you have to start remembering everything that has been taught.

You have to start remembering the procedure. Of course we know, but then we have to start doing. I can comment on my experience that time only stretches. It seems that everything is happening very slowly,” admitted Juris Ignatovičs, the chief flight instructor of the pilot school “Eriva”.

In addition to the engine, the plane also has a wing permanently damaged when it hits a sign on the highway. But could the situation have been foreseen? Pilots must always inspect the aircraft before take off. “All the procedures are described, that is, the so-called checklist. Where is… Well, like the spymaster,” Ignatovich presented.

All covers must be removed, fuel quantity and quality, lights, aircraft mounts and other things must be checked. It is a long enough but important work. “Now we come to the engine. We check, of course, visually. All the pipes, wires, so that no damage is visible,” Ignatovich said.

And during that time there was no indication of the brewing problems.

“Engine failures happen. They happen to both small planes and big ones. The problem here is that there is only one engine, but like any technique, it is not 100% safe.

All pilots are trained for all kinds of scenarios, including this one,” said the flight instructor.

He emphasized that the pilot acted correctly in this situation. The pilot himself will be heard soon and an investigation will begin.
