“Yesterday at 23.45 we came again, we took the extension cord. We also arrived in the morning, there are no restrictions, you can still get into the apartments. People were still walking, yes,” say the residents of the house, Diāna and Aiva.
Even on Wednesday, a rare resident continued to live in the house. Among them is Ligita. The lady found a place to stay – a rented apartment – only today.
“I was also in the city council, and I was offered dormitories there. Forgive me, there are such, such faces walking around, I won’t say rudely, shared shower, shared bath, what am I going to do there, horrors. I went now to the Friendship 16 to rent, but the money is terrible, I don’t know if I will be able to afford it,” says Ligita.
What to do next? It is not clear to the residents of the house. Neither the building board nor the building manager provides them with any information.
“We don’t know anything, no matter how long, a year, six months, no one tells us anything. We don’t know what to do, what to do next. The manager doesn’t need us, no one needs us at all, neither the city council nor the building board,” said Valentina, a resident of the building.

In the municipality of Ogre region, however, they say that the local authority’s hands are tied. They can only help the residents with transport for the transfer of belongings or temporary apartments. The rest, unfortunately, the residents have to bear on their own shoulders, because the house is private property.
“The role of the municipality is limited in this situation. The municipality took care of the most important thing – people’s health and life, that’s why this evacuation decision is made. Because the construction board, upon receiving this opinion, was not even able to make any other decision. However, the next step is absolutely in the hands of the residents and the solution of the house manager,” says Patriks Griva, the head of the Communication Department of the municipality of Ogre region.
The manager of the fourth building on Draužijas Street, the company “Eku projekti & pravadžina”, was stingy in his comments about the current situation, inviting you to familiarize yourself with the post on the social media “Facebook”. There, they criticize the residents themselves, who have not seemed to know about the poor technical condition of the building for years.
“The owners of these apartments should first of all be interested in the condition of the building in which they own the apartments. Unfortunately, this is a typical situation in Latvia, when people imagine that they have privatized or bought only an apartment, but they have nothing to do with the stairwell, basement, roof, the general condition of the building structures, the adjacent land area. If the attitude does not change, if apartment owners do not start to realize that they need to take care of the building as a whole, it can be predicted that situations like the one in a particular house in Ogre will become more and more frequent in the future,” says the manager’s statement.
Construction experts have warned in advance that the technical condition of apartment buildings built in Soviet times must be paid more and more attention. The service life of these houses without capital investment is 50-70 years – and now this time is slowly starting to arrive.
