Riga City Council will hold a conference dedicated to youth issues

On May 22, the Riga City Council’s Social Issues Committee is holding the conference “Mirror of Adults’ Impossibility” for the first time. During the conference, two topics will be discussed: psychological violence between children and young people in educational institutions and the need for a new integrated service in the municipality.

During the conference, a poignant photo exhibition “They are already only children” will be opened, the authors of which are the young people of the Resilience Center. They have experienced all kinds of violence and talk about it both through their photographs and the accompanying stories of their experiences. Association “Resilience centrs” is an organization that provides professional assistance to children and young people who have been left without proper family care, victims of violence and other crimes, as well as young people with behavioral problems.

Ieva Brante, deputy chairperson of the Social Issues Committee, emphasizes: “It is wrong to think that the problematic behavior of children is only a problem in the capital. Riga can and wants to offer a new integrated service, which would include child and youth care, social rehabilitation, work with the family or their closest circle of people. However, Riga municipality is not the decision-maker in this matter. It has to be looked at nationally. We have knocked on the government’s door and tried to point out the existence of the problem and the need for a solution, but at the national level there is no readiness to recognize youth drinking as a problem. Therefore, it is important to keep the topic relevant and to continue working on this issue, because we all understand very well that it is only a matter of time when one crisis situation replaces another and each subsequent one.”

Specialists and experts from various fields from the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, Children’s Clinical University Hospital, Riga Stradins University, Riga Municipal Police, “Heart to heart” association, Latvian Association of Municipalities, SOS Children’s Villages Association, Riga Municipality will participate in the conference.

The conference will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Riga City Council meeting hall.
