During the project, data on the safety of movement of cyclists and scooters, including the quality of streets and bike lanes, will be analyzed and compared with each other in four countries and a total of six cities. Data will be collected with the help of video and other sensors, which will be installed on micromobility tools.

Currently, it is planned that Spain, Italy, Romania and Latvia will participate in the project.

Riga municipality will participate as a pilot territory within three years. Within the framework of the project budget, which is financed 100% from the project funds, the city of Riga will have the opportunity to purchase technical means, which will also remain the property of the city after the end of the project.

The total funding of the project “Mobility solutions to improve safety for different groups of road users (EvoRoads)” is 96,750 euros, of which 19,350 euros is pre-financing.

The draft decision still needs to be supported at the Riga City Council meeting.

But what about pedestrians? Some time ago, on the social media platform “X”, a user with the name “k.trine” shared a video from Vancouver, Canada on his account. It shows that as part of the pilot project, bricks were placed at the pedestrian crossings, which people could safely take in their hands every time they crossed the pedestrian crossing.

The idea behind the pilot project was to make people feel safe when crossing the road.

Sharing this video on social networks, the user “k.trine” wrote: “Lovely, Riga really needs this too, if nothing else is done to make pedestrians feel safe.”

Our portal contacted and is currently waiting for a comment from the Riga City Council regarding the question of whether and how pedestrian safety is being considered on the streets of Riga.
