Daugavpils municipality plans to support Sv. Restoration of the dome of the church in Peter’s Chains

The restoration of the dome of the Roman Catholic Church in Daugavpils St. Peter’s Chains is expected to begin this summer. Daugavpils municipality also plans to support this plan.

Saint Peter in Chains Church is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Daugavpils, built in 1845-1848. and rebuilt in the 20th century. in the 20s – 30s. One of the most recognizable sacred, cultural and tourist objects of the city, located in the very center, on Rīgas Street, is properly maintained: in recent years, by attracting funding from various sources, including the municipality’s sacred heritage preservation program, state and foreign funds, the colonnade has been restored, work done in the parish house. However, the ravages of time are cruel, and the issue of restoring the church dome must be urgently addressed. The National Cultural Heritage Administration has allocated funding of 135,000 euros for this purpose. However, the total cost of the works is 200,000 euros, which is why the congregation turned to Daugavpils municipality with a request to help find the missing funding.

The church building complex is a unique object in the historical part of the city, which is a protected cultural monument of the State of Urban Planning. In order to preserve the church and allow future generations to see its splendor, the question of allocating 50,000 euros for construction work was included in the regular meeting of the Finance Committee.

Andrejs Elksniņš, chairman of Daugavpils municipal council, states: “Currently, the city’s beautification and arrangement works are very active. And the municipality will provide the necessary financial support to the Church of St. Peter in Chains, which is located in the city center, on Riga Street, and is not only a cultural monument, but also the architectural pride of the city. Finally, the domes of the church will be fixed, which will make our city much more attractive both as a cultural object and, of course, it will be a great space, a great support for our faithful residents.”

The church is ready to start work right after the city festival. However, in order for the renovation to be completed successfully, at least another 15,000 euros are needed.
