Latvia’s U-18 national hockey team wins the first victory against the Slovaks in the world championship / Article

The goals for Latvia were scored by Markus Kristians Sieradzkis, Maksims Haritoncevs, Olivers Mūrnieks, Krists Retenais and Dmitrijs Diļevka.

The Latvian hockey players did not keep the 3:1 advantage accumulated in the first third and the Slovaks equalized in the second period, however, Retenais regained the lead before the last break, reaching 4:3. A little more than six minutes before the final whistle, Diļevka strengthened the advantage of the Latvian national team with the fifth goal.

In the first game in the group stage, the Latvians lost to Finland (1:3), while the young Slovaks recognized the superiority of the USA national team (0:9). The Latvian national team led by head coach Oļegs Sorokina will play against the USA in the group of five teams on Sunday, and will meet the Norwegians on Monday.

Sweden, Czech Republic, Canada, Kazakhstan and Switzerland play in the second subgroup. The top four teams in each group will advance to the quarter-finals, while the last-placed teams will play head-to-head to determine which team will be relegated from the elite.

The medal winners of the U-18 World Championship will be determined in the finals on May 5.
