Welsh actor Sir Anthony Hopkins will play the lead role in a new biographical film about the 18th century composer Georg Friedrich Handel (1685-1759).

The now 86-year-old Anthony Hopkins has played various historical characters during his more than 60-year acting career, from US President Richard Nixon to the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. Well, it’s the turn of the German baroque composer Handel, whose creative life passed in 18th century London. The plot of the film “The King of Covent Garden” will revolve around the events in 1740, when Handel created his masterpiece “Messiah”.

The film is billed as “a celebration of the courage and daring of a genius, pushing boundaries to create a piece that will impact the imaginations of listeners around the world.” The film is scheduled to hit the big screens in the second half of 2025.

The career of the Welsh actor Anthony Hopkins began already in the 60s, first in the theater and then in the cinema. The actor starred in films of various genres, received the Laurence Olivier Award for his performance in the theater, four British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), as well as two “Oscars” – in 1991 for the role of Hannibal Lecter in the horror film “Silence of Lambs” (“Silence of the Lambs”) and In 2022, for the main role in the film “Father”, at the age of 83, he became the oldest actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor.
