On Tuesday, the government supported the determination of the status of an object of national interest for the territory and objects of the Academic Center of the University of Latvia (LU).
Determining the status of an object of national interest, giving the opportunity to “legally correctly implement” the development projects of the Academic Center of the LU, the idea is justified by the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM). Determining the status will also reduce the risks that the implementation of development projects of the Academic Center of LU could be delayed even more.
If any person or group of persons, for example, landowners, environmental activists, associations of residents of areas subject to construction, are dissatisfied with the construction of such objects, they will not be able to stop the implementation of the infrastructure construction of an object affecting national interests.
At the end of last year, the government approved the LU Real Estate Development Plan for 2022-2027, which determines the LU’s actions in the field of real estate development. The plan describes the set of LU real estates, defines the plan’s strategic goals and directions of action, as well as lists real estate development projects and plans.
Last year, the preparation of the procurement documentation for the third stage of the Academic Center development project – the Sports House and the Health House – was started, as well as the procurement of the Sports House was announced. This year, on the other hand, it is planned to forward the decision on the initiation of the public-private partnership procedure for the Student and guest house project to the government for approval.
However, due to several reasons, including delays in the processes resulting from Russian aggression, the implementation of the projects has been delayed by a year. This threatens the observance of the timeline set in the LU Real Estate Development Plan, which is closely related to the expropriation of LU real estate and the relocation of structural units to the Academic Center.
