The shocking incident, which was recently shared with the media by a mother living in Great Britain, took place last September in Dorset Hospital, England, when the new mother gave birth to her daughter Isabella.
As the “Nypost” portal reports, the mother discovered the unpleasant situation when she went to change her diapers. It turned out that it was not her daughter that she cared about, but a strange boy.
Still with a heavy heart about what happened, the woman says: “What could not have happened! I could have breastfed this baby or the other mom could have woken up to an empty crib.”
Shortly after the birth of her daughter Izabella, the midwives told her that the baby needed phototherapy and would have to be placed in a special nursery.
When a woman went to check on her newborn at night, she found a midwife with a baby in her arms. The midwife said that the baby cried a lot, so she took him to her. As the mother says: “She also told me that the girl looks exactly like me. It was so early and I was two days postpartum, so I just took him back to me, knowing it wasn’t my baby.”
Only later, when the mother went to change the baby’s diaper, did she discover that it was a stranger’s baby.
“My immediate reaction was that someone had stolen my child,” the mother recalls. “After four years of infertility, I was completely terrified and shocked. The other mom was sleeping in another ward, and I still don’t know if she even knew that her son had been handed over to me at some point.”
As far as we know, the girl was in the phototherapy bed the whole time. An investigation is underway at the hospital to find out how such an error could have occurred. As the director of the hospital’s midwifery department told the media: “We deeply regret all the suffering caused and have contacted the mother to offer her support. We encourage him to contact us to assist in the investigation. The safety of our parents and babies is a priority and we are committed to supporting the affected families.”
