In the previous week, 11 patients with a severe course of the disease were treated in inpatients (the week before, 10). The death of 21 Covid-19 patients in the age group “50 years and over” was registered. Getting sick with Covid-19 often significantly aggravates already existing chronic diseases, which require hospitalization and can even lead to death.

Flu

AAEI monitoring data show that the average intensity of the spread of influenza in Latvia increased last week, although the spread of flu has not yet exceeded the epidemic threshold level. 16 cases of influenza were laboratory confirmed, where all samples were determined to be influenza type A.

Last week, a total of 779 patients with symptoms of acute upper respiratory tract infection came to the practices of family doctors involved in monitoring, of which 44 patients were diagnosed with “flu” based on a typical clinical picture (32 last week). Cases were registered in Ventspils, Jurmala, Jēkabpils, Jelgava, Daugavpils and Riga. The highest incidence of influenza was registered in the age group 0-4 years.

In many European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries, a significant increase in the number of acute respiratory infections in primary care is observed. In the EU/EEA as a whole, the proportion of positive tests for Covid-19 was 20% and the proportion of positive tests for influenza was 18%.

In order to reduce the risk of serious illness, hospitalization and death, SKPC invites everyone to get vaccinated against seasonal flu and Covid-19, however, it is especially recommended to do so for people in health risk groups, for whom the illness is often severe and who have a high risk of complications. This season, 107,790 residents have already been vaccinated against influenza with the vaccine paid for by the state, while 31,892 residents have been vaccinated against Covid-19.
